About this event

On Saturday, April 5, 2025, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Crailo State Historic Site and the Friends of Fort Crailo invite the public to the fourth of five “Colonial Kitchen” series of events offered during the months of March and April.

Join us for “All Manner of Cookery,” a historical cooking experience in Crailo’s hearth kitchen. This program will provide a hands-on experience in preparing traditional 17th century Dutch fare, while learning about cookery methods and hearth cooking techniques. In a convivial, team environment, participants will help prepare a well-rounded 17th century menu of sweet and savory dishes, after which the group will sit and enjoy the meal they have helped make! Relaxed setting with lots of conversation; all kitchen skills levels invited.

This program will be led by Dawn Elliot, Hudson Valley -based history and historical foodways educator, as well as enthusiastic eater! Her knowledge of and experience with hearth cooking and demonstrating 17th and 18th century food preparation may be seen at historic sites and events throughout the Hudson River Valley.

Program Fee: $60 per person (Cash or Check) & includes a copy of the popular 17th century Dutch cookbook, The Sensible Cook.

Space is extremely limited, so reserve your place today by calling Crailo at (518) 463-8738. Registration Deadline: 4/3.

Other programs offered in this series are the following:

Saturday, 4/12: Colonial Beer Brewing

Once part of the Van Rensselaer family’s vast landholdings, today, Crailo is the museum of the colonial Dutch.  Through archaeological research, exhibits, guided tours and educational programming, Crailo tells the complex stories of the early Dutch, Indigenous and African inhabitants of the upper Hudson River Valley. The museum is located at 9 ½ Riverside Ave in historic Rensselaer.
