Happy New Year! You’ve made the resolution to lose weight and eat healthier, but aren’t looking forward to the “diet”. For most, that word conjures up images of boiled chicken, plain vegetables, and plain rice. But just because you’re eating healthy doesn’t mean you need to give up taste!
Spices have next to no calories and can turn even the simplest meal into something delicious. And as an added bonus, many spices have added health benefits. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking.
Cinnamon has an anti-oxidant affect, helping protect the cells. It also can help regulate blood sugar levels, and satisfy your sweet tooth with only 6 calories per serving (1 teaspoon). As an added bonus, 1 serving per day can help boost your metabolism, burning more calories!
If you like things hot, cayenne pepper has no calories and has plenty of taste. Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, which has been the subject of many health studies. It has been shown to suppress body fat accumulation, suppresses appetite, and raises the metabolism right after the meal.
Ginger has long been known to help calm an upset stomach, But it also has an anti-inflammatory affect that can help reduce arthritis or other pain. Now that you’ll be exercising on a regular basis, too, taking ginger can reduce muscle soreness brought on by exercise. All at only 6 calories per serving (1 teaspoon).
Rosemary has only 2 calories per serving (1 tablespoon) and can liven up your chicken. Rich in anti-oxidants, rosemary can also help lower your risk of cancer.
There are many, many more spices out there that are loaded with anti-oxidants, will rev your metabolism, and will help prevent disease. With all of those choices, there is no reason your healthy diet has to be boring!
