If you have a child who suffers from asthma, eczema, or hay fever, what they eat could be partially to blame.
Adding to the potential health impact of processed foods, a recent study showed that kids who ate fast food 3 or more times per week had a 30% higher risk of developing these conditions. Risk was lower among those kids who ate fruit at least 3 times per week.
It’s important to note that the study merely shows an association between food and conditions, not a cause. Still, it’s not a surprising find. All of these conditions are inflammatory conditions. Sugars, vegetable oils, trans-fats, feedlot fed meat, processed meat, refined grains, and artificial additives are all known to increase inflammation. And all of those are common in processed and fast foods.
Even if it’s not the cause of these conditions, it still makes sense to limit their consumption. And to increase consumption of whole foods. Here is a great picture of foods that cause inflammation, and those that reduce it:
