It’s a new school year and, if you’re like me, you’re struggling to come up with healthy snack ideas to send with your child to school that they will actually eat. And not complain about. Here are 10 easy snack ideas that even the pickiest kid will enjoy:
- Vegetables and dressing. Glad makes mini plastic containers that are the ideal size for the dressing. Carrots or celery are easy to pop in a bag and can be purchased pre-cut, or you can cut your own.
- Apple slices and peanut butter.
- Cheese. String cheese is always popular. Or you can slice your own and use mini cookie cutters to make fun shapes if you want to be creative.
- Whole grain cereals. My son loves it when I pop some Cheerios in his lunch box. Toss in some raisins for an extra treat.
- Fruits.
- Granola bars. These are much healthier when you make them yourself. There are easy recipes out there (including nut free ones). I just made pumpkin chocolate chip bars that got rave reviews from both boys.
- Ants on a log. Put some peanut butter on a celery stick and top with raisins.
- Applesauce. Look for low sugar varieties. Even better, stock up now while they are in season and make your own.
- Meat roll-ups. Roll up some deli meat and cheese. You can even add mustard.
- Trail mix. Mix pretzels, granola (make your own, or make sure you get a low sugar brand), raisins or other dried fruit, nuts, sunflower or pumpkin seeds together. The great thing about this is that you can change it up often to keep snack boredom from setting in.
